What is Chiropractic?
The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily of the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. Chiropractors advocate a non-invasive approach to treatments of patients.
What is a Chiropractor?
A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) is an educated and trained health provider that identifies, evaluates and corrects misalignments of your spinal column with specific adjustments to allow your vertebral spine and nerve to function optimally. This is a safe and natural approach to treat the root cause of many ailments and biomechanical defaults. In addition to the proper function of your spine, chiropractors use a hands-on, drug-free approach to manage patients’ health with diets and exercises.
Today’s Chiropractors often continue their education with post-doctorate certifications and/or diplomat programs in highly specialized areas. Chiropractors can focus on neurology, pediatrics, radiology, and orthopedics, just to name a few. Here our doctors all received additional training in the prevention, evaluation and treatment of sports related injuries.
How does an adjustment work?
In reality, the spinal nerve root is rarely pinched by the bony structures of the spinal column. Your “pinched nerve” is mostly caused by the over stretching and rubbing of nerve tissues that result with the symptoms of pain, numbness, burning, or “pins & needles” down your hands and feet. But to describe the effects of an adjustment, imagine a garden hose as a nerve and the flow of water as your electrical nerve impulses. If the water hose is kinked, can water flow out freely? No! A subluxation or misalignment of the spine is like a kink in the hose. A specific manipulation of the spine will remove the kink to allow optimum nerve impulses.
Is chiropractic safe?
YES! Chiropractic adjustments are very safe. Chiropractors are able to use multiple techniques of adjustments to fit our patients’ injuries. Did you know that chiropractors have one of the lowest liability insurance premiums in health care, unlike the malpractice insurance crisis that medical doctors currently face?
A chiropractic student in school performs hundreds of adjustments supervised by licensed clinicians with real patients before receiving their doctorate degree. The safety and efficacy of manipulations are very questionable when performed by other health care professionals.
What can I expect on my first visit?
After filling out the proper forms and documents, your file will be prepared for the doctor. The doctor will do a thorough focused history of your injuries and ailments. During the examination, the doctor may perform a series of orthopedic test, neurological tests, muscle tests, range of motion, and palpation to determine the extent of your injuries. The doctor may or may not require X-Rays and/or MRI to determine a proper diagnosis. If X-Rays are needed, we can provide the service, rather than referring you to outside resources.
Once the diagnosis is made, your doctor will start the treatment protocol right away! You may receive one or a series of adjustments, physiotherapies, and/or rehabilitation exercises specific to your problem. Your chiropractor will discuss and answer any questions you may have about your condition before you leave.
Do Chiropractors only treat back or neck pain?
No, a good percentage of our patients’ injuries do not involve the spine. Most of the sports and work related injuries involves the shoulders, elbows, hands, hips, knees, and feet. All these issues can be treated easily with conservative care. We have a physiotherapy and rehabilitation center that is equipped to handle almost everything. If we can not handle a particular case, you can rest assure, that patient will be referred to the right doctor for further evaluation.
What age group can receive chiropractic care?
All ages can benefit a healthier lifestyle with chiropractic care. We are primary a full service family chiropractic clinic. Seniors can benefit by the increase in mobility and decrease of chronic pain symptoms associated with many degenerated conditions and age related ailments. Children can benefit with regular checkups, because many childhood activities and sports (ie. football) can have traumatic effects on the spine. Our body changes as we grow-up and grow older. It makes sense to have regular checkups with your Chiropractor, just like your biannual dental visits or annual physical exams with a medical doctor.
